South Africa's Win-win!

The World Cup is going to begin in South Africa next week from June 11 - July 11th.  This is a first for any African nation as FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) has never agreed to host the tournament there. The new film Fahrenheit 2010  points out who stands to profit -  as both FIFA and the South African Government will make enormous profits.  Although I think that it is great that South Africa will be the host, I certainly hope that some of the revenues generated will benefit the many impoverished South Africans who ironically, a large majority of whom will not be able to purchase tickets.   One would think that the South African Government, who built several new stadiums at a huge cost, would learn from the Olympics in Greece and other major sporting events (even though Germany made a sizeable profit in 2006 - consider several factors that made that possible). The hope obviously is to showcase all that South Africa has to offer and increase tourism - but at what cost?  Since FIFA is a non-profit organization and stands to make over 1 billion dollars, I would hope that most of the money raised will be given back to the community - wouldn't that be a win-win!
